Interview on Deutschlandfunk: Perspectives for green steel

06.11.2025

How can Germany transform its industry to become climate-neutral while remaining competitive? This question is at the heart of a recent Deutschlandfunk interview with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Sauer, coordinator of the WAVE-H2 industrial research platform, Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency in Production at the University of Stuttgart, and member of the executive board of Fraunhofer IPA.

In the interview, Prof. Sauer highlights the strategic importance of the steel industryfor Germany’s economy. The transition to green steel requires significant investment, technological innovation, and a clear industrial policy framework. While Germany may not produce the cheapest steel, “green steel made in Germany” will remain a key driver of industrial value creation, climate protection, and technological leadership.

The interview illustrates how closely research, policy, and industry must work together to enable a sustainable and competitive industrial transformation.
